Answers to Q2 A, Q2 B & Q2 C are below

Q2 A: Char:  How can I tell an aerobics instructor is good and qualified?

Answer: Make sure they are certified through a nationally recognized organization, such as the American Council on Exercise.  All instructors should demonstrate different intensity levels, from low impact to high intensity.  Then YOU pick your intensity and workout at your own pace.  Good instructors follow a routine that includes, start with a warm up, stretch, workout, cool down, and final stretch.   Tell your instructor what you like or don't like.  Remember this is YOUR class.  Have fun and if you still don't know if your instructor is good, stop by one of my classes .... just kidding!!

Q2 B: Char:  What should an exercise program have in it?

Answer:  A complete fitness program must include aerobic exercise, muscular strength and endurance conditioning and of course flexibility exercise.  Aerobic exercise does good things for your cariovascular system and for weight management.   Bicycling, swimming, elliptical trainer (see below) and all kinds of aerobic classes fall into the aerobic category.  Muscular strength and endurance conditioning improves strength and posture.  Also, it is another component to weight management.   Calisthenics, free weights or machines will work, take your pick.  Just be sure that you are training every major muscle group, including arms, chest, back, stomach, hips and legs.  Flexibility exercise reduces muscle soreness, and the risk of injury.   It increases your joint's range of motion.  Remember to warm up prior to stretching, hold your stretch 10 to 30 seconds, and BREATH.

Q2 C: Dear Char:  What benefits do the new elliptical trainers offer?

Answer: They allow you to move in a low-impact, oval motion and provide a good workout.  The calorie expenditure is similar to aerobic dancing or running at a 11.5 minute per mile pace.  Again something different to add to your aerobic arsenal.   Keep trying new classes, new machines, new activities!!!  Change your routine and make it fun!!!
